Building Code Modification Request

Building Code Modification Request Form (PDF, 810KB)

Submissions: bldginspections@knoxvilletn.gov

Where there are practical difficulties involved in carrying out provisions of the Building Code, the Building Official has the authority to grant modifications for individual cases.

Upon receipt of a Building Code Modification Request (BCMR), City staff will gather to discuss the merits of the request, whether the request meets the intent and purpose of the Code, and determine whether the health, accessibility, life, and fire safety or structural requirements have not been reduced or harmed. The Building Official will either approve, reject, or request a revision of the request. Upon receipt of a rejected modification request, the applicant has the right to challenge the determination through the appeals process at the Construction Appeals Board.
